How the Pymetrics money exchange 2 game works

  1. You and your partner each start with $5. One of you is given an extra $5.
  2. In round one that extra $5 is dealt at random, so it may go to your partner instead of you. Whoever holds it decides.
  3. In round two the extra $5 is yours, and this time you can take from your partner as well as give.
  4. Anything you move is capped at $5, in 50 cent steps, so the even split of $2.50 is always reachable.
  5. Nothing is tripled and nothing is sent back. The total on the table is always $15.
  6. You rate how fair the transaction was, on a scale of 0 to 10.
  7. Two rounds, a different partner each time. There is no clock.

What the money exchange 2 game measures

The headline is how much of a bonus you hand to someone who can do nothing for you in return. That is the whole reason this game sits next to Money Exchange 1: there, sending money might pay you back, so a transfer is partly an investment. Here it cannot be, which is what makes the number readable. The sharpest thing it watches is the gap between your two rounds, because round two adds the option to take. It also records whether you took at all, whether you landed exactly on the even split, and, if the first bonus went to your partner, whether you judge the same split differently depending on which side of it you were standing.
